Pentasa Sachets/Pentasa | mesalamine | Brand | United Kingdom | 2g | 60 Sachets | DR | $208.00 | Add |
Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Pentasa Sachets (mesalamine) consist of granules that contain an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drug, used to treat Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, both of which are otherwise known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients may also buy Pentasa Sachets to treat similar bowel conditions, provided they involve inflammation.
This product is very similar to Pentasa Tablets; while the tablets consist of granules held together with a tableting material, the sachet just contains granules. Even though tablets can be dissolved in water to free the granules, patients who have persistant difficulty swallowing tablets will probably just want to buy Pentasa Sachets.
Patients as young as age 6 can use Pentasa Sachets, though dosage will be lower for younger patients. Mothers who are pregnant or breastfeeding should speak with a doctor before use.
Product Description
Patients who buy Pentasa Sachets will receive a number of individually-wrapped sachets, each of which contains 1 g, 2 g, or 4 g of medication according to which was purchased. Multiple low-dose sachets can be taken to create a single large dose; for example, taking four 1 g sachets is the same as taking one 4 g sachet. There is no difference effect-wise.
To use, open the sachet by tearing or cutting the top off and empty the contents onto the tongue. Granules can be swallowed as-is or, as most people prefer, washed down with a glass of fluid.
Granules must not be chewed. They're designed to pass through the stomach into the bowel, where they slowly release the medication. Chewing disrupts this process and they'll mostly be absorbed in the stomach, where they provide little benefit.
Dosage & Administration
Patients buy Pentasa Sachets to treat active attacks and to maintain remission. Treatment is very similar, though dosage does vary a bit.
In active attacks, the bowel becomes inflamed and causes discomfort, pain, bloating, diarrhea, urgent need to empty the bowels, and so forth. Aside from being uncomfortable this can be very disruptive. To treat an active attack:
Active attacks should be resolved in a few days to two weeks.
In remission, the condition is still present but not remarkably inflamed and with few or no symptoms. However, an active attack is all but imminent with IBD, as there's no known cure. Patients buy Pentasa Sachets to help keep IBD in remission; while it may not work 100 percent of the time for all patients, even when attacks do occur they're less frequent, less severe, and easier to resolve. To maintain remission:
In children age 6 and up dosage largely depends on weight; those who weigh under 40 kg (88 lbs) should take half of the adult dose, or 2 mg per day to treat an active attack and 1 mg to maintain remission. Those who weigh more than 40 kg (88 lbs) can take an adult dose. Ideally a child's dosage will be determined by a doctor.
In all cases, while taking Pentasa Sachets, if the condition does not improve within one month of treatment or grows worse at any time, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
Before you Buy Pentasa Sachets
Certain patients should not buy Pentasa Sachets at all, namely those who have a history of:
Speak with a doctor before use if there is a history of:
Medications which are concerning and should pointed out to the prescribing doctor include:
Most common side effects associated with this medication are difficult to distinguish from symptoms of IBD itself, including diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. These are not cause for concern unless severe or persistant.
